Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food – approximately one third of all annual food production – is wasted globally, according to the FAO in 2013, yet every day, 800 million people around the world are not able to satisfy their basic food needs. To tackle the problem of food waste, the New Taipei City Government has established the Surplus Food Network with the aim of sharing food and alleviating food poverty.
When I was little, my grandmother insisted that I finish all my food at meals and not waste anything. In the agricultural society of that age, frequent food shortages meant people loved and cared about food. They wasted no food and made good use of leftovers for animal feed.
In order to redistribute surplus food to people in need, the mission of the Surplus Food Network is to encourage the public to appreciate food and share surplus food. The New Taipei City Government launched this project in an attempt to gradually reduce food waste and change citizens’ eating habits through advocacy and early education.

The Surplus Food Network is a cross-departmental city government effort to foster food education, environmental protection, food cherishing and food sharing to encourage the public to develop less wasteful food practices and to share surplus food with disadvantaged groups.
